Ride The Outlaw Trail Game: “Who Were Those Guys?”

Ever wonder what it was like to ride with the Wild Bunch? Just what went on at Etta’s Place? Did Butch and Sundance meet their final fate in Bolivia? When was the last time you handled a Colt Peacemaker, a Winchester Rifle, or rustled cattle? How would you like to ride along with Butch, Sundance, and the boys robbing the same banks and trains as they did? If you met up with Tom Horn, would he be friend or foe?

Well, folks, here is your invitation to ride with the infamous outlaw gang. Conceived in a dream and created through twelve years of dedicated research, {>} Dusty Grothusen, introduced this unusual, historic board game in 2003. Since its introduction, this game has developed an international following and is even popular with many of our military men and women overseas. Although the game was not created for young children, it has been embraced and enjoyed by children as young as age five right on up to great-grandfathers.

How to play? Easy. Get started by bringing together 2-8 players and set aside a couple of hours of uninterrupted time. That’s right, pard. You heard me. Turn off those 21st century gadgets including that big screen TV. Choose a Banker. Each player chooses a cowboy playing piece and places him on the MOUNT UP square. Get your bank roll. Roll the dice to see who begins. PLAY!

As a player, you start out with $300, a horse and the clothes on your back. As you travel around the board, specific squares allow you to gather your guns and gear. Once you have that basic cowboy equipment you can steal cows and horses. Be aware that your herd can be stolen from you along your way to the shipping point. Land on “Gather Outlaws” squares to form you gang.

Once you have a gang of three you advance to the Inner Trail. Robbing banks and trains is your new pursuit. These robberies are the very same ones the Wild Bunch orchestrated. The size of your outfit determines your share of the loot. This trail contains the bulk of the Outlaw Fate spaces. Land on one, draw an Outlaw Fate card and follow its directions…for good…or bad.

To win this game a player must successfully ride the Final Trail. You have entered Tom Horn country. You either win the game or lose your life. Players will literally come out of their chairs as fate deals them yet another interesting hand. This game never plays the same way twice. But win or lose one thing’s for sure, by the end you’ll know the answer to that legendary question “Who are those guys?”
