In Spanish, the word
milagro has several meanings including miracle or surprise. Religious folk charms, they come in a variety of shapes including legs, arms, hearts, and hands. They might be attached to a sacred object, as these milagros are attached to the cross, or they might be carried or worn for protection and good luck. Each milagros may have different meanings – for instance- a leg might refer to travel, walking, or represent a prayer request for healing of arthritis or a broken bone. The use of milagros is a folk custom, traceable to the early Spanish inhabitants of the Southwest that continues today.
