Blues harmonica player and vocalist
Carey Bell (1936-2007) performed with the great bands like Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. Growing up in Macon, Mississippi he yearned for a saxophone but, unable to afford one, turned to the harmonica. A gift from his grandfather, he was playing by age 8 and at 19 moved to Chicago with his godfather, pianist Lovie Lee. His trademark sound, often described as "clipped and growling style," was admired by fans for over 50 years.
