When you think of Bing Crosby, what comes first to mind? A family cherished Christmas album? Those "on the road" comedies with Bob Hope? Crosby recorded a lot of Western music, and like his contemporary Gene Autry, he contributed to the growing interest in cowboys and the West in the mid 1930s.
Rhythm on the Range (Paramount, 1936), starring Bing Crosby, Frances Farmer, and the Sons of the Pioneers was a big-budget film that brought the Western story mainstream and was well received. According to music historian
Douglas Green, "Crosby roped in sophisticates with his frequent performances of western songs on film, on record, and especially on radio, where he was a national sensation."
