#9152 CD Tex Ritter: Singin' In The Saddle

Singin' In The Saddle
Released: 1999

While attending collage in the mid 1920s, Tex Ritter had the benefit of mentorship from three influential men who helped shape and direct his career: J. Frank Dobie, authority on Southwestern folk lore, John A. Lomax, collector of American folk ballads, and Oscar J. Fox, composer of cowboy songs. Of all the singing cowboys, Ritter is considered to be the most knowledgeable about the roots of cowboy folk songs.

Douglas Green, in Singing in the Saddle, has this to say about Tex Ritter:
"Tex Ritter, who would become one of the singing- cowboy titans, was a regional radio and recording star when he made his first film, Song of the Gringo, for Grand National in 1936. As with Gene Autry, Ritter on-screen was instantly appealing to the public. Although he was not a genuine cowboy, he was a Texan with a great love and knowledge of cowboy song and lore, and his rough-hewn voice had an authority and authenticity unmatched among singing cowboys. ..He was also the best brawler of the singing cowboys...With his lank hair dropping over his face as he stood over the pulverized remains of a film's villain, he was the very picture of the tough, two-fisted cowboy of the historical West that he played on film."
