From our Purveyor of Music:
If you relish reading about the West or traveling through it's landscape, why not provide the "soundtrack" of the time period you are experiencing? Brass Bands were THE music of the moment during much of the 19th century and played a very important role on the battlefields of the Civil War and later in the West.
This CD captures the music of Custer's band leader and virtuoso cornet player. Felix Vinatieri led the band that went with Custer, as he headed West toward the Little Big Horn in 1876, although they remained on the steamboat, the Far West. After the battle, the bandsmen served as medics for the wounded soldiers from Reno's detachment.
According to the extensive, engaging and enlightening liner notes, Vinatieri's legacy is in the music he wrote: marches, polkas, overatures, waltzes and other works.
Steve Charpié, a renowned trumpet player who works with other professional musicians specializing in performing 19th-century brass band music on original instruments of the period, worked with the Vinatieri archives of America's Shrine of Music Museum and brought his music to life.
I have enjoyed this CD since it was first released in 2001. I'm pleased to be able to offer it to you.
