I had the good fortune of meeting this month's Featured Artist Robert Mance at a photography exhibition last fall. His exhibition space was at the very end of the gallery but I could see this image as I entered the door. I was drawn to it immediately and his was the first exhibit I looked at. After viewing this piece, and meeting the artist, I knew OutWest needed him!

When we first moved to California from Connecticut a day trip to the California Poppy Preserve was one of our first adventures. I'll never forget that day.

I had heard of the famous "California Poppy," it is our state flower afterall. Mountains and hillsides look like gold when they bloom in early spring...if there has been sufficient rain in the winter months. Nothing I read or images I saw prepared me for my experience in these very fields. The blooms are captivating, gently blowing in the breeze they beckon you off the pathways and into their waiting beds. Mesmerizing. You must step off the paths - even though signs warn you not to. Although the paths teemed with visitors there was a quiet, a hush to the crowds as we each found ourselves in touch with nature and our God. An occasional chuckle, a lot of gasps of excitement and surprise, a child's laugh of glee...these were the only sounds. No talking on cell phones, no, everyone was truly in the moment...there among the rich orange and gold colors of California.

Robert Mance captures this landscape for those that have been there. And, for those at a distance you can imagine yourself amid California's Gold.
