OutWest Store - Native America - Folk Art

OutWest is pleased to present the work of several distinguished Navajo artists including Edith Herbert John and her husband Guy and The Growler Family.

Navajo Folk Artists Edith Herbert John and her husband Guy and The Growler Family are known the world over for their engaging and often humorous chickens, owls, crows, horses, goats, and sheep.

Edith Herbert John and her husband Guy live in Sweetwater, Arizona with their children. Edith, daughter of contemporary folk artist, Woody Herbert, started carving cottonwood in 1990 for fun, working with her father to make toys for the children. The immense popularity of her work has made carving an important source of income for the Johns. Guy works with Edith to make stylized creatures in every imaginable color. Owls, turkeys and chickens are among the Johns' most sought after carvings.

The Growler Family is one of the leaders in the Navajo Folk art movement. After attending college and working in several states, Ruby Growler-Smith returned to her home near Teec Nos Pos, Arizona, and began using the techniques her family taught her to create these sheep and goats. Individuals world wide now seek these whimsical creatures to add to their collections.
