Doris, along with friends Joni Harms and Eli Barsi gave us a magical evening in August 2009 just shortly after OutWest opened our doors. What started with these Cowgirls has gone on to be the SCVTV Presents The OutWest Concert Series! “Doris’s poetry blazes with brilliant wit and fiery word wizardry; her finely crafted work sparkles with an infectious love of the West. On stage and on the page, she represents the best of the best in cowboy poetry today.” Margo Metegrano, www.cowboypoetry.com Doris has been an emcee and featured performer at every cowboy festival in Canada as well as many in the United States, including Santa Clarita and Monterey in California; Elko Nevada; Alpine Texas; Heber City, Utah; Valentine, Nebraska and countless others. This Southern Alberta native is at home around campfires or in convention halls all over North America, from the Smithsonian Institute and Ottawa's National Library to "high society" campfires on the trail at 7,000 ft. Known as "the wordsmith's poet", Doris brings a love of wordplay to her work and a depth of understanding....not only of the west but of the English language. You'll hear something new every time! Jack Hannah, Sons of the San Joaquin, says, "Doris is the pre-eminent female poet in this genre and the equal of any male writing today...her gift is unique and her appeal is irresistible." Whether the topic is potatoes, ranch romance, dancing with the stars, Will James, her pioneer ancestors, ranch house answering machines, Charlie Russell, or the changing English language, here is a poet who packs flare and punch into every piece. Born and raised on a four-generation family ranch in the Alberta foothills, Doris comes from a gene pool that includes ranchers, cowboys, Mounties, good cooks, sorry team ropers, Irish stowaways, bushwhackers, liars, two-steppers and saskatoon pickers: an impeccable pedigree for anyone wanting to be a cowboy poet.
