http://www.the-signal.com/news/article/27482/ From our Purveyors: We cannot say enough wonderful things about our friend, Janet. She has supported OutWest from the first moment we met appearing with us at the Buckaroo Book Shop at 2009's Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival. Shortly after, she went with us on the road greeting visitors at our booth at several outdoor events. During out July and August opening celebrations...Janet was there. She's been with us on the radio and at many outdoor events. We are honored to be counted as one of her many friends. Janet is multi-talented. Let me tell you about The Ruthe Scarf. This scarf collection is from Janet's imagination and hand. One dear friend, Ruthe, and she like to go yarn shopping together and dreamed of the wonderful creations they would make. This friend lost her battle with cancer and all her yarns were gifted to Janet. Thinking of her friend and the hours they dreamed together, she began making The Ruthe Scarf. With every sale, 25% is donated to Cancer Research. Although her stock of Ruthe's own yarns is long gone, Janet continues creating The Ruthe Scarf. OutWest is pleased to be one of the boutiques offering these lovely handmade pieces to the discriminating shopper. ![]() Janet began her career writing articles for several regional and national magazines and won the Los Angeles Pierce College 5th Annual Writers' Conference Award for outstanding magazine article. She's a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and Women Writing the West (WWW). She's co-chaired Young Author Conferences, taught writing workshops for children, provided in-service training/seminars for teachers, directed a student-run newspaper, created musical reader's theater performance of The Gingerbread Cowboy for the Santa Clarita Children's Art and Literacy Festival and lectured on children's books and the creative writing process for children and adults.
In addition to school and public library visits, she's presented at the SCLLN (Southern California Library Literacy Network) Conference, the Arizona State Young Author's Conference and the LAUSD Passport to Reading Festival.
The Gingerbread Cowboy, was selected by Dr. Peggy Sharp for her "What's New and Best in Children's Literature" list and is featured by Dr. Sharp in her presentations "What's New in Children's Literature and How to Use it in Your Program." The Gingerbread Cowboy was declared the Arizona Governor's 2007 First Grade Book and a special edition of 100,000 copies was printed for distribution to every first grade student in Arizona.
When not putting pen to paper in search of her next story, Janet is on horseback exploring the hills or working with cattle - a natural enough pursuit for a gal whose family pioneered their way West by covered wagon from Texas to Arizona. Today, she shares time with her husband, two daughters and four dogs and counts themselves lucky to live where hawks still sail overhead by day and coyotes serenade a night. Shop Janet Squires:
